Re-Elect Tom Hawk
It has been my honor to serve the past four years as District 22 State Senator. I ran on a platform of:
Good Schools *** Good Jobs *** Fair Taxes
These are still my cornerstone Legislative work values. Unfortunately, the majority has not so far funded our schools at a level that is adequate and there is a court case in progress to determine the next steps. I believe strongly, as I have as a teacher, counselor and administrator that our public schools and higher and post-secondary education opportunities are the keys to the success of our state. Along with early childhood education, this is the foundation for our young people and their future productivity.
This campaign of 2016 will be a referendum on the failed tax, management and economic policies of our current Governor. We have not established good jobs and we certainly do not have a fair tax structure where 330,000 of our businesses do not pay any income tax. This Governor and his allies have made incredible contortions with our budget to cover up the failure of our tax policy. Too many areas of state government are not able to operate properly and many talented, skilled employees have left. Our failures in the raiding of nearly $2B from our 10 year transportation plan to cover state debt is but one example of this mismanagement. Last year the Legislature, without my vote, and the Governor implemented the largest tax increase in the history of our state, raising sales tax and taking away many key exemptions from the income tax of poor and middle class working Kansans.
I am eager to get back to Topeka in January and start to work on fixing the budget, funding our schools, and putting commonsense policies in place to create and support jobs in our state. I still believe in bi-partisan cooperation and work hard to find common ground to work on the problems in my committees with all of my colleagues. That will continue to be my mode of operation in all future Senate Legislative sessions. I appreciate all of the past support and hope I have gained your support and vote in this upcoming election.
