About Tom

I’m a proud graduate of Kansas State University with a B.S. in Math Education, a M.S. in Counseling and a doctorate degree in Educational Administration. While a student senator at Kansas State University in 1967-68, I sponsored a bill that helped construct the Wildcat’s football stadium.

Working in the Manhattan-Ogden public schools for 33 years, I began my career as a junior high math teacher and counselor. For 25 years I served as a curriculum director, assistant superintendent for personnel and finance, and then as superintendent for the 2000-2001 school year. Now that I’m retired, I’m ready to continue bringing new ideas to the legislature and to commit my time to working and fighting for the citizens of District 22 and Kansas.

I’m also a long time local businessman that has provided wedding, recital and graduation photography in several states. I know what it means to meet a payroll and how important it is to have a vibrant economy for Manhattan-Junction City, Clay Center, our entire region, and for the state of Kansas. Believing that economic development is extremely important and that good strategic planning is essential, I have previously been active on the City of Manhattan’s Comprehensive Land Use Task Force.

Since running for the Kansas House in 2002, I have had a very exciting and interesting political career added on to my public education and business adventures.  I served in the House for six years from 2005-2010.  Losing one election, I then was appointed by the Board and the Governor to serve as Executive Director of the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board and see first hand how my own Professional Counseling License was managed and regulated along with Social Workers, Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and recently Addiction Counselors.  In 2010 I was elected to my current four term as State Senator for the Riley, Geary and Clay County District 22.

I’ve been involved in numerous community organizations over the years including being a member of the Rotary Club, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, the KSU Alumni Association, the Governor’s Military Council, and serving on the boards of my church and of the Manhattan Emergency Shelter. And here's some more that have given me a good background about many of the things that make our communities a great place to live, work, and raise a family:
